1 Deputy Killed, 2 Wounded in Ambush at Houston Bar – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Three police officers were ambushed to death early Saturday morning while working an extra shift in a Houston bar, with one deputy dead and two others injured, Texas authorities said.

Authorities took one person into custody but are still looking for a man believed to be the shooter, Houston Police Department deputy chief James Jones told reporters

Harris County police officers were working at 45 North Bar and Lounge when responding to an out-of-business disturbance around 2:15 p.m., Jones said.

They were trying to arrest someone when another person attacked them with a rifle and opened fire on the MPs from behind, Jones said, according to preliminary information from the crime scene.

One lieutenant was shot in the back and another in the foot, said Mark Herman, Harris County Constable Precinct 4. The third lieutenant was pronounced dead at the hospital.

It is unclear whether MPs returned fire, Jones said. He said the Houston police are still investigating, but authorities believe the disturbance could be a robbery that the cops stopped.

A person of interest was arrested at the scene, but authorities were unsure if the person was a suspect or a witness.

Constables are licensed peace officers who serve a variety of law enforcement functions, according to the Texas Association of Counties.
