A 28-year-old man was arrested for murder after his girlfriend’s body was found in an apartment near Julian T. Saldivar Elementary School in northwest Dallas on Saturday, police said.

David Perez was held in the Dallas County Jail on Monday with bail set at $ 1 million.

Officers were called to Block 9500 on Brockbank Drive at around 7:10 p.m. Saturday after the body was reported. The victim, whose neck had been cut, was pronounced dead at the apartment. She was identified as Heather Hammond.

A witness told police that Perez asked them to call 911 for him, according to an affidavit with an arrest warrant.

Police later interviewed Perez, who said he and Hammond used heroin that morning and then got into an argument, the affidavit said. He told the police that he passed out and that Hammond was lying on the floor when he woke up.

Authorities also reported finding a knife in the home that appeared to have blood and hair.
