$39M ‘Iconic Property’ Near Dallas Is Texas’ Most Expensive Home
A huge property in an upscale area of Dallas is currently the most expensive home for sale in Texas.
Listed for $ 39 million and just outside the Volk Estates enclave in University Park, TX, the 12,664 square foot home is stately to say the least. In the listing provided by the agent, Alex Perry, the house is described as an “iconic property” in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Dallas.
Originally built in 1946, the six bedroom house has been modernized over the decades. And while its style is classic, it is equipped with smart home technology in a nod to the luxury of the 21st century.
To ensure warmth during a cold Dallas winter, the residence has eight fireplaces. Car enthusiasts will pass out over the five car garage.
Inside, the main living quarters of the mansion have high ceilings and lots of windows that let in lots of natural light.

The legendary architect and designer from Dallas Cole Smith renovated this mansion before passing away in 2019 at the age of 92. The house, known as his “opus”, has 16,748 square meters of living space, which is filled with custom-made and hand-forged metal throughout.
Smith was known as a history buff who infused both classical and historical styles into his architecture. All the windows and some of the French doors open by turning the bronze “lobster claw” handles that Smith made himself.
All vents are specially designed to match the rooms they are in, and the chandeliers are also unique and hand-forged.
Smith also designed the house’s solarium, which has metal leaf panels that open like a flower at the touch of a button. It is known as the “crown” of the house.

It sits on a huge 2.86 acre lot of beautiful grounds designed by the Dallas landscape architecture firm Armstrong-Berger.
The outdoor spaces are enhanced by fountains and statues that give the outdoor areas a formal atmosphere. The home also offers resort-style amenities, including a huge pool, cabana, spa, outdoor kitchen, fire pit, tennis court, beach volleyball area, and party pavilion.
While a chef can prepare a meal outside, the indoor kitchen of the house is filled with high-end appliances and has a large island with plenty of seating. There is also a wine cellar with custom-made metal doors decorated with grapes and vines.
University Park is north of Dallas and is home to Southern Methodist University and the George W. Bush Presidential Center.
The current owner of the house, the manager John C. Tolleson, is an SMU graduate and was a former member of the school’s board of trustees from 2000 to 2012.
