4 spots in Texas named ‘50 most vibrant and delicious restaurants’ in U.S.
A restaurant in the Dallas area made a breakthrough in a New York Times list of the “50 Liveliest, Tastiest Restaurants in the United States in 2021”.

Take a trip to the Dallas suburbs, says the NYT, to the Farmers Branch Restaurant Roots Southern Table. It comes from longtime Dallas chef and top chef candidate Tiffany Derry.
The newspaper is right: Roots Southern Table is one of the best restaurants in North Texas to get gumbo. And it’s a nice take on how Derry sees southern food, which she describes as a “rich” and “diverse” genre that’s so much more than mac and cheese and fried chicken, she told the Dallas Morning News before the opening of the restaurant in June 2021.
Derry’s food “speaks in loud exclamations,” according to the NYT story. The corn bread with smoked butter is like a “warm hug”; the fried potatoes made from duck fat are “a hug”.
Other Texan restaurants on the list include Birdie’s, a neighborhood wine bar in Austin; Blood Bros. BBQ, a smoked meat house that plays with Asian flavors, just outside of Houston; and Sylvia’s, a taco shop in Brownsville.
Roots Southern Table is located at 13050 Bee Street, Farmers Branch. Dinner only. Closed on Monday. Given the praise from the NYT, you should probably make reservations.
