4 Texas brands win big in H-E-B’s quest for the best new products
Congratulations to four Lone Star brands that have just received major honors from HEB of San Antonio.
Dallas’ Savor Pâtisserie won the $ 25,000 grand prize in HE-B’s Quest for Texas Best competition, which honors world-class products from companies across the state. The grocery chain praised Savor Pâtisserie for its French macarons.
Kelli Watts, half French but born and raised in Texas, has developed her own version of the French macaron and opened the first Savor Pâtisserie location in 2016. Today the bakery operates four stores in Dallas-Fort Worth and sells macarons online to buyers across the country.
HEB says Watts’ “beautifully delicious” treats are gluten-free and each have fewer than 100 calories. Flavors include vanilla, strawberry, lemon, pistachio, s’mores, cookies ‘n’ cream, and birthday cake.
More than 1,200 product suggestions were submitted to this year’s “Quest for Texas Best” competition. The products of the four winners are distributed by HEB.
“Every year we are amazed at what Texans contribute to this competition. Despite the disruption from COVID-19, these entrepreneurs have shown creativity, determination and perseverance to grow their businesses, “said James Harris, director of diversity and inclusion and supplier diversity at HEB, in a press release.
First place (and $ 20,000) went to 2F Akaushi Beef, supplier to Texas Wagyu ground beef. It is located in the city of Santa Elena in the Rio Grande Valley. The natural, hormone-free, antibiotic beef is a mixture of feed, rump and steak ingredients.
HEB awarded second place (and $ 15,000) to Austin-based Bhoomi for its improved sugarcane water. The company’s founders are Arpit and Elora Bhopalkar.
Bhoomi offers a range of rehydrating cold pressed sugar cane elixirs mixed with ancient Ayurvedic superbotanicals for recovery, immunity and superfood properties. The flavors of the Paleo-certified water include ginger, turmeric, and moringa.
Howdy Homemade Ice Cream from Dallas took third prize of $ 10,000 for its Dr Pepper Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Tom Landis and Coleman Jones founded the company.
“Howdy Homemade Ice Cream is known for its iconic Dr Pepper chocolate chip ice cream and its mission to change the way companies hire people with special needs,” says HEB. “With two locations in Dallas [and] Another five are on the way, and Howdy Homemade Ice Cream is also working with numerous special needs organizations to hire, train and employ people with Down syndrome and autism. “
