Prerak Shah, the acting US attorney for the Northern District of Texas, announced his resignation on Wednesday, effective October 1, the bureau said.
Shah became a U.S. attorney for the district, which includes 100 districts and approximately 8 million residents, following the departure of former U.S. Attorney Erin Nealy Cox in January.
“It was the honor of his life to serve the 8 million people in North Texas as acting US attorney,” Shah said in a prepared statement. “I have had the privilege of not only working with the best public prosecutors in the country, but also working side by side with incomparable partners at the federal, state and local levels. I am proud to have contributed to the proud legacy of this office of promoting justice and freedom for all. “
Cases followed by Shah’s team included those involving developer Ruel Hamilton, who was convicted of bribing former Dallas city council members Dwaine Caraway and Carolyn Davis to use them for his low-income housing projects voices; a Wichita Falls man planning to blow up an Amazon Web Services data center in Virginia; a Fort Worth doctor convicted of operating a “pill factory” worth $ 18 million; and the owner of a business school in the Dallas area found guilty of defrauding Veterans Affairs for approximately $ 70 million.
His office also oversaw the prosecution of spine surgeons and business associates Michael Rimlawi and Douglas Won in Dallas, who were convicted of millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks from the now-defunct Forest Park Medical Center, as well as Bradley and Amy Harris and others who attended a 40- Million dollar program to refer Medicare patients to a Frisco hospice company in exchange for kickbacks – a conspiracy that sometimes resulted in patient over-medication with dangerous narcotics.
Shah was previously chief of staff to Republican Senator Ted Cruz and senior counsel in the Texas Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Attorney General said.
He plans to open a private practice, the office said.
