After 66 years in Dallas, Mac’s Bar-B-Que closing Monday

DALLAS Macs Bar-B-Que is a two-person operation. It has been a family business for almost 70 years. They say goodbye now, but not before one last barbecue. A Dallas barbecue staple says goodbye on Monday. “Everyone who is in this business, it’s a passion and a love. You have to love it to do it, ”said Billy McDonald. McDonald runs Mac’s Bar-B-Que on Main Street, where he follows in his father’s footsteps. “And he opened Mac’s Bar-B-Que in the first week of January 1955,” said McDonald. His father sold three types of meat. “And that was a brisket, Polish sausage from Rudolph’s meat market, and we had cured smoked ham,” he said. He repeated that there is no pulled pork on the menu. “I’m a real Texas BBQ house. It’s beef and beef is king,” said McDonald. Together, he and his customers have experienced ups and downs over the years. “I’ve been to families who have lost family members and passed away. I went to these funerals. I gave them food,” he said. Now the 67-year-old said he was tired and his time was up. On Monday he is open for lunch as normal, and when the food is used up he will say goodbye. A Mexican restaurant moves in. McDonald says he will support her while he also watches the barbecue he missed. “I’m here. I don’t have the time. Now I have the time to check out the other BBQ guys,” he said. In the meantime, he thinks of those who woke him up dark and early for decades. “And I just want to thank everyone for being a customer,” he said. McDonald said he and his significant other will have the last barbecue sandwich before they close. He said he plans to be the first customer as soon as the next restaurant opens.
