Thoreau Lane in Allen is lined with humble brick houses, but one thing stands out this season.

“Welcome to the life-size gingerbread house,” says Katy Kaufmann.

Kaufmann has a bakery business called Oh Jupiters! She wanted to thank her customers for their loyalty during the pandemic by building a small holiday backdrop to take pictures of in her garden.

Kaufmann’s little idea spiraled into a spiral that spanned the entire house and front yard, complete with cupcakes made from lampshades and sweets made from pool noodles.

Friends, family and neighbors helped build the decoration and offered to donate money for it. Kaufmann didn’t want the money for himself.

“Did you think of doing it for someone’s benefit,” said Kaufmann, when asked. “And I was like, ‘Oh yeah, and I have someone we could do that for.'”

It was Kaufmann’s neighbor and friend, Hannah Gullory, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last year. For everyone who can and wants to donate to Gullory, there is a QR code in the front yard of Kaufmann. Kaufmann asked people to tag their photos with #sweethopehouse.

“Last Christmas I didn’t know if I would be here this Christmas,” said Gullory, wiping away his tears. “It was really humiliating for us to be on the receiving end.”

Kaufmann said she only pays it up.

“It’s easy to say, ‘Oh wow, you are so wonderful that you do this,’ but maybe it’s just an expression of the love we received from both God and our friends,” said Kaufmann. “I hope it brings her joy and I hope it feels like a big hug.”

“I love it,” said Gullory, sitting on a candy cane bench.
