American Airlines reduces service to Haiti amid rise in violence, citing reduced customer demand

American Airlines has reduced its service to Haiti amid the increase in violence in the area, stating that customer demand for travel is falling.

An American Airlines spokesman told FOX Business that the company will only operate one daily flight between Port-au-Prince and Miami from November 15.

The company will operate three daily flights to Haiti over the weekend, one from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and two from Miami International Airport.

“Due to lower customer demand to / from Haiti, we will reduce our flights to Haiti to one daily flight between Port-au-Prince (PAP) and Miami (MIA) from Monday, November 15th,” said the spokesman. “We apologize to our affected customers and are working to accommodate them on other flights.”

Haiti has seen an increase in violence in recent months. A gang kidnapped 17 missionaries in Haiti in October. The gang that kidnapped the group, 400 Mawozo, are known for murders, kidnappings and extortion.

The gang demanded a ransom of $ 1 million per person, a total of $ 17 million for the missionaries’ release.

In October, 328 kidnappings were reported to the Haiti National Police that year, compared with a total of 234 kidnappings in all of 2020.
