A mother and her two-year-old son had to disembark an American Airlines flight on Monday after the child failed to wear a mask.

Amanda Pendarvis posted on her Instagram story that she, her young son and mother were taken off the flight. Pendarvis said her son had an asthma attack at the time.

Flight 1284 returned to its gate at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport before flying to Colorado after the group refused to “comply with instructions from crew members to remain seated on an active taxiway and to wear face-covers securely over their nose and mouth” , Airlines announced in a statement with FOX Business.

The airline said crew members were never made aware that the child was having an asthma attack or had difficulty breathing. In addition, according to the airline, the passengers were not approached at any time during the treatment for non-compliance with the requirements for face covering.

A Twitter user who said she was a friend of Pendarvis posted a series of images of the incident, including one that appeared to show Pendarvis trying to put a mask on her son.

A one-minute video shows the child screaming and crying as the mother tries to properly place the mask over his face. At some point you hear the child say “no” while the woman tries again and again to calm him down.

At the end of the clip, the woman and child were waited in the jetbridge, which the authorities picked up.

American also said the flight crew made “several attempts to tighten security” after seeing “a minor in the group lying in the aisle, moving between seats as they roll out”.

According to federal safety regulations, all customers must remain seated with a seat belt when an aircraft is on an active taxiway, the airline said.

As part of its policy, American requires all individuals 2 years of age or older to wear face-covering at all times unless they are eating or drinking.

“Federal law requires you to wear face covering at all times indoors at the airport and on board your flight. “You can also expect penalties under federal law.”

These rules don’t apply to anyone under the age of 2 or who have a disability that prevents them from wearing a mask, according to American.

After departure, American said passengers were rebooked on the next flight to Colorado Springs the same day after agreeing to “adhere to guidelines for the safety of our customers and crew.”
