Construction on a 1 mile (1.6 km) stretch of Irving Boulevard designed to revitalize the city’s downtown area will begin in November.
The project, which has been in the works for several years, will include the creation of bike lanes, access to public transportation, and expanded walkways between Sowers Road and Strickland Plaza, according to the city.
City officials have touted the project as a downtown transformation that will draw residents, visitors and businesses to the long-neglected area.
Several expansions have been completed or are in progress, including development of the Main Street Plaza, lighting upgrades at the Millennium Fountain, and a redesign of the Heritage Park due to be completed in December.
Irving City Council awarded a $ 22.2 million contract in July to build Irving Boulevard. The work is scheduled to start on November 15th and last until 2023.
When completed, it will include four Dallas Area Rapid Transit stops, additional parallel parking, architectural improvements to intersections, new benches, tree tops and street lights with LED lighting. This also includes improvements to the drainage, water and sewer systems.
