DALLAS and FORT WORTH, Texas, December 7, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Guests now view the latest in check-in technology at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Spirit Airlines (NYSE: SAVE) unveiled its automated self-bag dropping experience with biometric photo-matching system, which represents a new paradigm for the US aviation industry. The redesigned ticket lobby is packed with industry-leading technology designed to limit personal interactions, streamline flight check-ins, and get guests from the curb to the brightest aircraft in the sky faster than ever before.
Spirit’s self-bag drop system is currently in operation at New Yorks LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Chicago O’Hare, and was recently awarded two prestigious awards. The “2021 Best Airport Innovation” from the APEX / IFSA Awards and also a Gold Stevie® Award winner for the best new transportation product or service at the 2021 American Business Awards®.
In 2019, the airline and its partner Materna Intelligent Passenger Solutions (IPS) began developing the country’s first biometric photo-matching solution for domestic air traffic. North America. Spirit was also the first to combine it with automated baggage drop-off capabilities to reduce personal interaction. After an initial test phase at DFW with both manual ID verification and a biometric opt-in solution, the biometric photo comparison solution makes it unnecessary to stop and hand over an official ID to an agent when checking in the baggage.
This is how biometric photo matching works:
- Guests begin by tagging their own checked baggage at the kiosk after checking in and then proceed to automatic bag drop.
- Guests are informed of the biometric option after scanning their boarding pass at the baggage drop-off point. You can either log in and proceed without assistance, or you can log out of the agent-assisted service.
- As soon as the guest has logged in, the device instructs them to scan their ID on the integrated hardware.
- The device compares its scan of the photo on the ID card with a facial scan taken by its on-board camera and compares the identification information with the guest’s reservation details. None of the data is transmitted to a government agency.
- A successful match initiates the rest of the automatic baggage check-in process. Guests are instructed to place their baggage on the conveyor belt attached to the unit, which then scans the baggage, weighs it, accepts payment for additional optional services, and sends it directly to the checked baggage system at their airport without further guest intervention.
“We were on a mission to find ways to further improve every facet of the guest experience, including investing in automation and self-service to optimize the journey so guests spend less time in lobbies,” said Mike Byrom, Vice President, Airport Services, Spirit Airlines. “Our guests are tech-savvy and value options. Also, the restriction of touchpoints and unnecessary personal interactions is currently changing the way airports are operated. “
“Dallas Fort Worth International Airport strives to identify and test innovative solutions that provide safe, efficient and smooth customer experiences, “said DFW Airport Vice President of Innovation Jodie Brinkerhoff. “We are pleased to support our partner Spirit Airlines in introducing a self-controlled, biometrically activated check-in and baggage drop-off process, which ultimately offers the customer more control and fewer requirements for personal processing and document exchange. “
Spirit guests currently check between 400 and 500 pieces of luggage at DFW every day and are growing, and each one represents a personal interaction that can be streamlined. Test data shows that the new process reduces the average processing time to just 70 seconds per guest and reduces the time for baggage checks by 30 percent. In addition, guests can benefit from the time savings and the reduction in personal interactions, regardless of whether they are traveling domestically or internationally.
The self-bag drop system uses software that is capable of analyzing the key physical characteristics of more than 50,000 badges from nearly 200 countries that a guest could potentially use while traveling The United States. In combination with the scanning hardware of the devices, the software confirms the authenticity of an ID and rejects fraudulent documents.
