Barbara A. Aten

Barbara A. Aten of Bemus Point, NY, went to see her master on Sunday morning, November 28, 2021 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Barbara was born on September 4, 1933 in Big Rapids, Michigan, to Stanley and Katie Fae Too-good. She lived in the Bemus Point area for 64 years.

She graduated from Big Rapids, Michigan high school and graduated from the Davenport Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan with a degree in business administration. Here she met her husband Murl. They married in January 1953 and lived in Chicago, Illinois, where their first child was born. They relocated to Jamestown, NY, with Murl’s Blodgett Uncrated Furniture Service, and had two more daughters.

Barbara also worked for Blodgett Uncrated Furniture Service for several years and then took a position as an assistant librarian at Maple Grove Jr. High school. From there she worked for the town of Ellery as a town clerk until her retirement.

She loved gardening, canning, cooking and enjoyed the horses with Murl at horse rides and parades. She also loved her church. She was very musical and played the accordion, lap steel guitar and piano. She was particularly fond of polka music.

She is deeply missed by her family: Her daughters: Sherry (Larry) Johnson of Attica, NY, Julie (Scott) Spencer of Dallas, Texas, and Gayle (Mick) Pereira of Knoxville, Tennessee; and foster daughter Denise (Dennis) Doonan of Bronx, NY. She has seven grandchildren: Katie Frantz, Ryan Spencer, Ted Johnson, Alyssa Spencer, James Pereira, Kylie Doonan, and Conor Doonan. There are four great-grandchildren: Addison Frantz, Macey Frantz, Tayte Johnson, and Grady Johnson.

Barbara did not request a funeral or memorial service. There is a funeral service for the family in spring. She is buried next to her husband in Bemus Point Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorabilia to Smokey Mountain Hospice, 7051 Strawberry Plains Pike, Knoxville, TN 37914 or Sacred Ground Hospice House, 1120 Dry Gap Pike, Knoxville, TN 37918.

We are grateful to all of the mothers who love and are caring friends and neighbors who have been such a big part of their lives. She taught her daughters strength and independence and the importance of family values. She is missed so much.
