Beto O’Rourke says Matthew McConaughey ‘will continue to do a lot of good for the people of Texas’
They were once considered potential rivals, but now that Matthew McConaughey has announced he won’t run for governor next year, what does Beto O’Rourke think of the Oscar-winning actor and his remaining political ambitions?
“Matthew McConaughey is someone who has done and continues to do great good for the people of Texas,” O’Rourke told The Dallas Morning News after meeting a group of several Asian-American business owners and entrepreneurs in an Addison office building Wednesday evening.
While his exact stance on many policy issues remained unclear, polls released before McConaughey announced he was not running suggested he might be a force to be reckoned with in the governor’s race.
A Dallas Morning News / UT-Tyler poll released earlier this month found that all voters were almost 2 to 1 more likely to support McConaughey than O’Rourke. A host of Democrats and Independents wanted the movie star to run. The poll also showed he was leading Governor Greg Abbott by eight points in a head-to-head match.
But in a video on Sunday, McConaughey said, despite being humiliated at being viewed as a potential candidate, it was a path he “does not want to take right now.” He also said he will help in other ways to take the lead, by “supporting entrepreneurs, companies and foundations that I believe are leaders”.
O’Rourke said Wednesday he still appreciates how McConaughey and his family participated in the relief effort after the 2019 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso that killed 23 people. Earlier this year, McConaughey and his wife Camila also helped raise funds for Texans affected by the devastating winter storm.
“He wasn’t worried about pointing a finger or pointing the finger – he wanted to help raise money to families who were literally frozen out of their homes or whose pipes had burst and their homes or apartments had burst,” said O ‘ Rourke. “So I’m grateful for his contribution to this state and I definitely hope to work with him and see him continue to do great things for Texas.”
