Bike-building event in Plano benefits elementary school students in need

A bike building event offered elementary school students life lessons and a cool new ride in Plano.

The Golden State Foods Foundation hosted the event last Friday for the benefit of 50 students from Mendenhall Elementary School in Plano, the foundation said in an email.

The students built their own bikes under the guidance of a volunteer mentor from the foundation. They also received helmets and bicycle locks.

The event was part of the foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for children and families in need.

But it was about more than just getting a new bike.

Volunteers spoke with students about life skills such as the value of hard work, goal setting, safety, and healthy living habits, including physical activity.

Since the Golden State Foods Foundation was established in 2002, she has donated more than 8,200 bicycles.

The event was organized by a Frisco-based division of Golden State Foods. Other attendees were the Plano Fire Department and Richardson Bike Mart.
