Brian Luscher’s Suburban Yacht Club Brings SoCal Vibes to Plano

AAfter The Grape, an iconic American eatery in Lower Greenville that closed in 2019, co-owner and chef Brian Luscher turned to the Dallas suburbs’ dining scene. He joined 33 Restaurant Group (based in Frisco), known for Plano’s Union Bear Brewing Co., McKinney’s Cadillac Pizza Pub, and more, and made his debut at the Suburban Yacht Club at The Boardwalk in Granite Park in Plano just a month ago . The new restaurant is a coastal canteen inspired by the boardwalks of Southern California and offers refined tropical cocktails and delicious bites.

As you walk into the room it feels like you’re jumping into a restaurant on the pier. There are a couple of large screens with ocean settings and an airy indoor / outdoor area with massive garage door style windows. But the moment you see the tropical drinks, you feel completely transported.

From four types of frozen cocktails, including Mangonada Margarita and Cuba Libre, to watermelon and basil vodka drinks served in an inflatable flamingo (the Basic Beach), the drinks menu has a lot to explore. I chose the Tiki Tai, a refreshing variant of a Mai Tai with Plantation Pineapple and Kuleana Nanea Rum, Orange Curacao, Orgeat and pandan foam. The Fast Paradise was also a favorite with tequila, gin, grapefruit, coconut syrup, orgeat, and purple pea blossom. Another bestseller is the Seafoam Surfer, the blue version of a margarita from Suburban Yacht Club.

If you come with a group, there are two “Scorpion Bowls” that ensure a good time with all the trimmings. Options include Captain Ron’s rum punch and Weekend at Bernie’s, a tequila-based drink.

The menu at Suburban Yacht Club is extensive too, so I’ll narrow it down to a few favorites. Definitely start with the Flamin ‘Hot Cheetos Elote. Paired with the SoCal Coastal Ceviche, both are delicious and won’t spoil your main course appetite. The Bowls and Baskets portion of the menu is inspired by dishes found while strolling along a beach or boardwalk in Southern California. A beach burger, fish sandwich, shrimp burrito are just a few suggestions. We mixed and matched tacos because there are so many fascinating options on the menu including a short rib quesabirria, pork carnitas and Baja BBQ chicken. But it was the fish tacos with Baja beer that I couldn’t put down.

Finally, be prepared when you order the pineapple upside-down cake. It’s huge and it was so good that we finished it all. We left the restaurant very full but happy.
