Bryan Trubey, one of the country’s foremost stadium architects, whose credentials include designing the AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field, has left Dallas-based HKS Architects, the company he joined in 1992.

“I’ve been with HKS for 29 years,” Trubey said in an exclusive interview with The Dallas Morning News on Thursday. “When I got there to start the sports and entertainment group, I had a leadership mandate to build this practice, and 29 years later we have what others consider to be one of the most respected portfolios in the industry.”

His design achievements include not only the home stadiums of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers, but also those of the Minnesota Vikings, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. Not to mention locations abroad.

Trubey, who recently turned 60, grew up in Oak Cliff, where his extended family has lived since the 1920s. He graduated from Skyline High School in Pleasant Grove before moving to Texas A&M University, where he focused on architecture. He and his wife Laura are parents of four children. The family has their home in Preston Hollow.

“As a boy from Dallas, one of the few things that I’m very proud of and that I really enjoy is the opportunity to create something here in Dallas,” said Trubey, “and then export that. Under my leadership, we have successfully achieved this nationally with our portfolio, and now we are moving into the international markets “- including a new stadium-arena combination in China.”

Trubey didn’t want to say why he no longer works at HKS. The company, which has more than 20 offices around the world but is headquartered in downtown Dallas, made the following statement on Thursday afternoon:

According to Trubey, “leadership can be based on values. In other words, we can agree on what is morally right, ethically right, what has integrity, but we can still see differences in our vision for the future. And these differences can sometimes get too big. The contrast can be too great. Sometimes in such situations it is appropriate to find yourself in different environments in order to resolve this. “

Trubey said he left HKS in the middle of last week and did so with the title of Global Director of Venues. He served as the design director for the $ 1.2 billion AT&T Stadium, which opened in 2009, and the $ 1.2 billion Globe Life Field, which opened last year. He carried the same title in his work at the $ 6 billion SoFi stadium in Inglewood, California, which opened in 2020, albeit not for a single fan in the stands due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was also part of the team planning the expansion of Klyde Warren Park, which has not yet begun.

“I can talk about each of our projects the way an author talks about his book,” said Trubey on Thursday. “The difference, however, is that we have large creative teams in our business. One of the things that I’m very proud of is the fact that I have managed and built what I believe to be the most brilliant creative team in the sports and entertainment business and maybe also in architecture. “

Trubey cited his team’s outstanding achievement in “completing billion dollar buildings at the speed we were completing them. Large creative teams are very important. But that doesn’t diminish my role ”in putting together a“ quality creative team that has attracted other designers ”. And he is, according to Trubey, “the common denominator of all these projects”.

Trubey says it’s impossible to tell which project makes him proudest, and compares the question to a father asked to name his favorite child. He said he hoped his future would include what he calls his “civic” cause for Dallas.

“I have a real heart for the south side of Dallas,” he said. “My whole family history is there. So now I’m looking forward to doubling down on that kind of effort. I have a feeling that from Dallas we can take on the world and continue to make Dallas a great city. I now have the age, experience and knowledge to move on and do my best job. “
