Changes at the top for industry media titles, Angi’s new CFO, and more

As the industry evolves, its players don’t stand still – this month, multiple releases lead to changes at the top as the NCARB’s new president turns his attention to equity and inclusion. Read on for the monthly summary of Business of Home arrivals and departures in design, manufacturing, media, and more.

Here at Business of Home we look forward to welcoming you Caroline Biggs as our new market editor. Domino and Lonny’s alum writings have most recently appeared in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Apartment Therapy, Refinery29, Martha Stewart Living, Wirecutter, and others. At BOH, Biggs will develop and launch a new editorial vertical that focuses on retail products.

We also warmly welcome you Kaitlin Menzawho is coming to BOH this summer as managing editor. Menza is Associate Editor with House Beautiful and has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, Vogue, Esquire, Marie Claire, Time, New York, Cosmopolitan, and more.

The New York Times called Bugbee star as the new styles editor and takes on the role of the Chore Sicha, who resigned in April to join the publication’s newsletter division as senior editor. Bugbee most recently served as Editor for New York Magazine and ran The Cut as Editor-in-Chief from 2013 to 2020 to transform the website’s digital presence and increase coverage of politics, gender and social issues.

Mitch Owens has given up his role as decorative arts editor for Architectural Digest. In the future, Owens will work as a freelance writer, editor and design consultant and will continue to organize style-related cultural trips internationally together with the exclusive luxury travel company Indagare.

Kelly Phillips Badal joined Luxe Interiors + Design as managing editor. In her new position, she will cover Southern California, the Pacific Northwest, Texas and Southeast, and produce the local news and events section of the publication. Badal has previously served as Editor-in-Chief of Interiors California Magazine, Senior Editor of Angeleno Magazine, and Senior Editor at Airbnb’s Luxury Retreats.

The architects’ newspaper had tapped Aaron Seward the next editor-in-chief. Seward was most recently the Editor of Texas Architect since 2015 and previously held several positions at AN, including Executive Editor. In the new role he follows the late one William Menkingwho co-founded the publication with its President and Editor, Diana darling.

At Architect, the magazine of the American Institute of Architects, Paul Makovsky was appointed editor-in-chief and replaced Katie Gerfen. In addition to his work as a consultant for product development and strategic content for various architecture firms and product manufacturers, Makovsky’s background includes two years as editor-in-chief of Contract magazine and 18 years at Metropolis, including vice president of design, editor and brand director.

Michaela Williams left Marie Flanigan Interiors to work as PR Director at The Dove Agency, working with interior design clients across the country. Williams is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and has been involved in public relations for more than 10 years, including previous positions at the Dallas Market Center and Dancie Perugini Ware Public Relations.

Emily Cones-Browne joined the Bjarke Ingels Group team as Global Public Relations Officer and has left her position as Associate Communications Director for UpSpring PR. Cones-Browne’s background includes previous positions at Clodagh Design and several Australian publications such as Art Edit and Luxury Travel Magazine.

Dina Rosenberg is now Senior Public Relations Manager at Herman Miller, leaving her previous position as Associate Vice President of HL Group. Rosenberg brings over a decade of relevant experience with companies such as J. Wade Public Relations, BWR Public Relations, and Harrison & Shriftman.

Design & architecture

Cincinnati-based architecture, design and strategy firm Nelson Worldwide has Philipp Otto as director of retail. Otto brings experience as a creative director for museums, retailers and developers, which has enabled him to work with brands such as Anthropologie, Coca-Cola International and Nike. He is also currently a lecturer at the University of Cincinnati, teaching courses on design trends and topics at the bachelor and master levels.

Washington, DC-based architecture and design firm // 3877 welcomed Bryan Wingold as director of Black + Green ops. Wingold has over 26 years of industry experience, having previously worked for Apple Hospitality REIT, Baskervill and Gresham, Smith and Partners.

Architecture, design and planning office HLW welcomes the architect and client Sejal Sonani as Managing Director of the firm’s Los Angeles office. Sonani first joined HLW in 2012 and has since led the studio’s adaptive reuse, repositioning, master planning, and ground construction services, as well as overseeing more than 1.5 million square feet of office projects along the west coast.

To trade

In the Dallas Market Center, Patty price has assumed the role of Vice President Leasing for the lighting industry. The industry veteran was Executive Vice President of Arteriors Home from 2010 to 2018 and was most recently Vice President of Sales at Global Views and Studio A | Home.

Shaw Industries Group has named Shannon Cochran as the new brand leader for Patcraft, a trademark within Shaw Industries. Cochran brings her five years of experience as Patcraft’s Vice President of Creative and Design to the table.

Jared Braverman is the new Marketing Director for the D&D Building in New York, taking on a role previously held by Liz nightingaleand building on more than 10 years of experience in digital marketing.

Oliver Deadman is the newest head of design at Clive Christian Furniture. A graduate of the University of Salford, Deadman first joined the company as a graphic designer in 2009 when he was trained under the founding director of design David Dunkley and helped digitize the company’s product catalog.

Retail & Manufacturing

Jason Edelmann joined the Williams-Sonoma executive team as senior vice president of the company’s private label. Edelman most recently served as Senior Vice President of Merchandising for the furniture division of Restoration Hardware and is returning to Williams-Sonoma with 20 years of industry experience after joining the brand on the merchandising team.

The online home improvement platform Angi (formerly known as Angie’s List) has the appointment of. announced Jeff Pedersen as chief financial officer. Pedersen’s background in technology finance spans nearly 25 years, with leadership positions at Amazon, Dell, and IBM, as well as home cleaning and home improvement startup Handy.

At the furniture rental service provider Cort, Joseph “JT” Marcum was promoted to corporate vice president. Marcum started at the company in 2019 as Vice President of Business Strategy and has gained experience in the fields of transport, third-party logistics and supply chain management over the course of his career.

Purple Innovation, which makes a range of mattresses, pillows and bedding, announced Patrice Varni as Chief Marketing and Digital Officer at headquarters in Lehi, Utah. Varni brings over 25 years of digital and brand marketing experience, most recently as Chief Marketing Officer and President of Dermstore, an online retail skin care product line.

Karen Mooney has assumed the position of President of Atlanta-based retail brand Ballard Designs, having previously served as Senior Vice President of Brand and host of the How to Decorate podcast. Mooney will take over the helm as the outgoing president Ryan McKelvey moves to a leadership position at Cornerstone Brands, Ballard’s parent company.

Industry organizations

Texan architect Alfred Vidaurri Jr. was inaugurated as President of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards 2021-2022 – the first Latino President in the organization’s 102-year history. During his tenure, Vidaurri plans to focus on how the process of obtaining an architectural license must evolve to meet future needs and how NCARB can support greater equity, diversity and inclusion in the process.

The New School appointed David J. Lewis as dean of the School of Constructed Environments in Parsons to oversee bachelor and master programs in architecture, industrial design, product design, interior design and lighting design. Lewis has taught at Parsons for nearly 20 years, including positions as Director of the Master of Architecture program, director of the design workshop and interim dean. Lewis is also the founding director of LTL Architects, a New York-based design-intensive architecture firm.
