09/05/2021 21:12:14 GMT + 00: 00 – Dallas Cowboys All-Pro Right Guard Zack Martin has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night.
Martin, 30, was put on the reserve / COVID-19 list on Sunday. He tested positive on Saturday after experiencing mild flu-like symptoms and loss of taste, the Dallas Morning News reported.
“He’s obviously frustrated,” said head coach Mike McCarthy of Martin, who is fully vaccinated. “But hey, this is the world we live in right now.”
Martin has started 104 of a possible 112 games since Dallas drafted him in the first round (16th overall) in 2014. He has made six straight pro bowls and won four all-pro first-team selections from 2014-19 before missing six games with a calf injury last season.
Reserve Guard Brandon Knight was also added to the Reserve / COVID-19 list on Sunday after being identified as a close contact. He has not tested positive, according to a team spokesperson.
Two Cowboys offensive linemen got better news. Right tackle La’el Collins was released to return to training on Sunday after sitting with a neck sting last week, and left security guard Connor Williams was activated from the COVID list.
Second grader Connor McGovern, 23, is expected to take on Martin’s place against the defending champion of the Super Bowl on Thursday night in Tampa.
