Cupcake shop in Dallas closed after vehicle barreled through front window

Gigi’s Cupcakes on Lovers Lane in Dallas, near the Dallas North Tollway, is closed indefinitely after a black Audi crashed into the glass front wall on December 1, 2021.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. that afternoon. The bakery reports that the driver put her vehicle in drive instead of reverse and then stepped on the accelerator.

No one was injured, according to a report from the Dallas Police Department. When the driver backed out of the bakery, it crashed into another car, the police say.

The Dallas police did not arrest anyone from the incident.

Gigi closed immediately. It is unclear how long the reopening will take. The store had “significant damage” both to the front of the store and to the kitchen, says a spokesman.

Vehicles have crashed into restaurants in the Dallas area with a surprising frequency in recent years. S&D Oyster Co. in Uptown Dallas had vehicles drive through the wall several times. At Haute Sweets Patisserie in late 2020, an SUV plowed into the bakery and hit three employees. At Thunderbird Station in Deep Ellum, a car sped over outdoor planters in late November 2021, leaving a tangle of crumpled steel and Christmas lights.

Gigi’s Cupcakes has six other locations in North Texas serving dessert fans while the shop on Lovers Lane is closed. These are located in Southlake, Mansfield, Fort Worth, Cedar Hill, Carrollton and Granbury.

Gigi’s Cupcakes, 5450 W. Lovers Lane, Dallas, will be temporarily closed from December 1, 2021.
