Dallas craft beer pioneer Braindead Brewing to shut down in Deep Ellum
A pioneering Dallas craft beer bar is counting its last days. Braindead Brewing, which has been open in Deep Ellum for nearly seven years, will close this weekend with its last day on Sunday November 28th.
Reports from employees spread throughout Thanksgiving week, and the bar eventually posted the news on their Facebook page, stating that “this will be our last weekend of business.”
“Our big homie Leo J is going to be jamming the tunes. Come out for a meal and one last pint before we close the doors on Sunday night,” her post said.
BrainDead opened in March 2015 by friends and partners Sam Wynne, Jeff Fryman, brewer Andrew Huerter and chef David Pena with a wall of faucets attached to colorful retro fridge door panels and containing their own beers made on site became. Patrons were also able to bring take-away beer in growlers, which was a big boom in 2015.
In addition to beer, they had a good menu with “beer-influenced” dishes, which they updated frequently and picked up on trends such as vegan and regional cuisine; they even ran a vegan bakery called SugarFang for a short time.
They also hosted an epic annual beer event called Festicle that took place on their fabulous patio and adjacent parking lot and attracted notable craft brewers from across the US
In 2016, at CultureMap’s annual Tastemaker Awards, they were named to the list of the best breweries, falling into the Brewpub category, combining brewery and restaurant into a one-stop shop.
In the same year, the team expanded with another concept called Bowls and Tacos, which includes tacos and poke bowls. However, it was closed in 2018; the room is now the home of the Thunderbird Station.
Pena and Huerter eventually left, and Wynne with partner Pasha Heidari opened another venue called Mike’s Gemini Twin that is still open.
Braindead has definitely taken a hit from COVID-19. In the middle of the pandemic, Wynne posted an SOS on Facebook fearing Braindead might not make it.
But Wynne said the Facebook post announcing the closure came as a surprise.
“I found out about the closure on Facebook,” he said. “Neither Counsel for Braindead nor I received a lockout notice from the landlord, so this is all new to me.”
Fryman did not respond to a request for comment.
In their farewell post they said they were “grateful for everyone who supported us during almost 7 years of brewpubbing in Deep Ellum, the best neighborhood ever. Our little staff will work hard all weekend so please give me.” Tip what you can and buy a couple of beers with “The Chefs.”
“We appreciate every person who has ever come through our doors and given us their time and hard-earned money,” they said. “We’re sorry to have to go, but we love you and wish you the best.”
