Dallas has the third-best arts district in the nation
The Dallas Arts District already advertises that it is the “largest contiguous urban arts district” in the country. Now, USA Today readers have voted it the third best in the 10Best Readers’ Choice Travels Awards announced on Friday.
Dallas was third after Cleveland’s University Circle and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. Arts District Houston ranked # 4, placing two of Texas’ cultural heavyweights in the top 5.
According to USA Today’s 10Best website, a panel of experts and 10Best editors selected 20 national nominees. After a four-week vote, the top 10 winners were determined. At least one of the criteria mentioned was how effectively cities used revitalized or renewed urban spaces.
“The Dallas Arts District is humble, honored and thrilled to be accepted into such a prestigious group of arts districts,” said Lily Cabatu Weiss, executive director of the Dallas Arts District, in a statement released Friday.
The Dallas Art District covers 118 acres and includes the Dallas Museum of Art, Crow Museum of Asian Art, Nasher Sculpture Center, Winspear Opera House, Wyly Theater, Meyerson Symphony Center, Perot Museum of Nature and Science and Moody Performance Hall. It also includes Klyde Warren Park and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts.
Last month, Dallas Morning News architecture critic Mark Lamster spoke out about the new Connect Plan for the Dallas Arts District, which will transform Pearl Street into an Avenue of the Arts running south from Carpenter Park McKinney Avenue in Uptown.
