Dallas’ hot start to summer will soon cool off a bit

The weather has reminded many of North Texas that it is the first week of summer, with temperatures hitting 97. But it may be a while before the heat really sets in.

Highs in the 80s and 90s are expected next week, and the rain is forecast to bring more clouds in the sky.

But there is still a humid weekend to survive, with temperatures of 97 on Friday and Saturday. The shift can start on Sunday when a high of 95 is expected.

The heat index values, which take into account air temperature and humidity, could be anywhere between 100 and 104 for the next few afternoons, said Rick Mitchell, chief meteorologist at KXAS-TV (NBC5).

These conditions are typical for this time of year, he said. Last year around this time, temperatures were in the 80s and 90s, according to the National Weather Service.

Given the humid afternoon conditions, Mitchell said the best time to be active is early – although even then it will still be damp. It’s also best to walk pets in the morning, as hot concrete can injure paws in the late afternoon temperatures.

A cold front can bring isolated showers and storms late Sunday and until next week, although cold fronts are usually weakest in summer.

Even if a weak cold front may not lower air temperatures much, it can still provide some relief.

“It’s possible that even if it doesn’t quite get in here; it will be close enough to create clouds, ”said Mitchell. “And that will help lower the temperature for early next week and also increase our chances of rain.”

The average for the region’s first three-digit day is July 1, Mitchell said.

“If we’re lucky, July 1st this year will actually be below normal temperatures,” he said. “So something to hope for.”
