Dallas ISD started serving roadside meals in March 2020 when the pandemic closed schools. The district never looked back, serving tens of millions of meals in new and different ways.
“Even before the pandemic broke out, many areas of our city were economically challenged and the pandemic only increased the damage. So we took pride in being on the front lines helping Dallas children every week from March until now, ”said Michael Rosenberger. the district executive director for food and child nutrition services.
But this week schools stopped hosting the free roadside meals. The new school year brings a return to traditional food service.

“We need time to reset some equipment, reorganize it, and move it from the roadside-serviced sites to where they came from so all campuses are ready,” Fletcher said.
“Breakfast and lunch will be available free of charge to all students from day one. So when students come forward, you come hungry. We will have a lot of good food for you, ”said Rosenberger.
And should Covid cases lead to disruptions again, the lunch breaks will keep moving.
“In all honesty, we are ready for anything from a 100% normal return of students to school to possibly having this new variant cause significant problems and whatever happens, we will be there for the children of Dallas ISD,” said Rosenberger.
“If we have learned anything in the last year, it is how to be flexible enough to be prepared for any circumstance,” said Fletcher.
Rosenberger pointed out a new idea that will be continued in the fall.
“We have a number of home tied students and they may be home for a few weeks or other things may happen for various reasons such as the COVID protocol. And what we only started this summer are home deliveries for us, so we can also provide you with food for a week. It’s just one example of our commitment to be there for our students wherever they are, “he said.
