Dallas Morning News receives 6 first-place awards from Texas APME

The Dallas Morning News received six top rankings in the 2020 Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Awards.

The awards, announced Tuesday, recognize the work done by newspapers across the state. They will be unveiled in October at a ceremony at the Group’s annual meeting in San Angelo.

The News competes in the AAAA class, which includes the state’s most widely distributed newspapers.

The News received second place for Newsroom of the Year, Team Effort and Online Live Coverage.

“After a year of unprecedented challenges, it is inspiring to see so many of our journalists receiving recognition for their great work,” said Keith Campbell, Editor-in-Chief of The News. “I am impressed with the range of work that has received awards. Congratulations to everyone. “

Mark Lamster received first place in feature writing and second place for the Michael Brick Storytelling Award, both for his work on the history of the Dallas race. It also won first place for comment and criticism.

Sharon Grigsby won first place in deadline writing for her work on the Parkland Memorial Hospital’s Tactical Care Unit for COVID-19 patients.

In the Designer of the Year category, Jeff Meddaugh won first place for The News and third place for Al Día. Smiley N. Pool received first place in sports photography as well as second place in game photography. John Hancock won first place in the Infographics category.

Kevin Sherrington won third place for Sports Column Writing and Anna Kuchment won third place for Specialty Reporting. Frank Christlieb took third place in headline writing.

Lynda M. González took third place in News Photography. It also received an Honorable Mention in the Star Photojournalist of the Year category.

The team of Alfredo Corchado, Cassandra Jaramillo and James Barragán won third place in feature writing for their reporting one year after filming in El Paso in 2019. Brad Townsend, Jaramillo, Catherine Marfin, Dana Branham, and LaVendrick Smith took third place in the Feature Series for their work on the Dallas murders.

In the Star Online Report of the Year category, the team of Lauren McGaughy, Dave Boucher, John Hancock, Pool, Tom Fox and Tommy Noel took third place for a two-part series on Dallas prosecutors’ use of hypnosis in crime investigations. McGaughy and Boucher also received an Honorable Mention in the Freedom of Information category for the same project.

Reporters Obed Manuel, Dan Singer, Corbett Smith, Dom DiFurio, Kevin Krause, Marc Ramirez, Jaramillo, Miles Moffeit, Jeremy Hallock, Maria Halkias, Tina Danze, Kuchment and Charles Scudder were awarded third place for the Star Breaking News Report of the Year for their protest coverage in summer 2020.

In the Team Effort category, Todd J. Gillman, Robert T. Garrett, Gromer Jeffers Jr., Barrágan, Tom Benning, Allie Morris, Nic Garcia, María Méndez, Paul Cobler, Elizabeth Thompson, Arnessa Garrett, Holly Hacker and John Gravois received one Special Mention for reporting on the 2020 elections.

Kyle Arnold received an Honorable Mention in Business Reporting. Jeffers received an Honorable Mention in General Column Writing.

Reporters Sue Ambrose and Moffeit received an Honorable Mention as Star Investigative Report of the Year for reporting allegations of sexual abuse against a Dallas pastor.

Al Día won first place as Spanish Language Newspaper of the Year for the third year in a row and received three other first places in the Spanish Language Newspaper Division.

In the Sports Writing category, Abraham Nudelstejer received first and second place and an honorable mention. He also won second place in feature writing.

Imelda García won first place in Feature Writing and an Honorable Mention in News Writing. Juan Jaramillo got first place in the opinion letter and Silvana Pagliuca got third place in this category. Wendy Selene Pérez won second place for News Writing.
