Dallas restaurant Tei-An is hosting a $5,555 whisky dinner

On November 9, 2021, Tei-An restaurant in Dallas will close for one evening to allow it to host a Japanese whiskey dinner, which costs $ 5,555 per person.

It’s one of the most expensive dinners we’ve ever seen in Dallas.

Guests who purchase a $ 5,555 ticket to Tei-An on November 9, 2021 can sample Yamazaki 55 and several other whiskeys, followed by a four-course meal.(Handout / Beam Suntory Inc.)

The event is held in honor of a rare Japanese whiskey, Yamazaki 55, made by Suntory. Only 100 bottles were launched worldwide that year, and Tei-An received the only bottle in Dallas. Tei-An General Manager Best Ranglek says they hosted the House of Suntory President several times, and he told the Tei-An team that this was “the only place to go.” [in Dallas] so that this bottle is served. “

The whiskey has stood untouched in Japan’s oldest distillery for over 50 years. That certainly adds to its mystery and fascination.

Ranglek didn’t want to say how much Tei-An paid for the bottle, but he called it “a fortune”.

“I would say it’s the most expensive bottle we’ve ever paid for,” he says.

Tasting and dinner at Tei-An are open to 18 price-conscious guests.

It starts with a taste of four Yamazaki whiskeys: the 12-year, 18-year, 25-year and 55-year bottles. Everything is served pure, ie it is poured directly from the bottle into the glass, without ice or a mixer. Afterwards, Chef Teiichi Sakurai will prepare a four-course meal that will be paired with Japanese whiskey cocktails. The evening ends with cigars.

Yamazaki 55 is a blend of single malts matured in Mizunara oak and then in white oak barrels. It was released in 2020 to celebrate the Tokyo Olympics that year – which have been postponed. While this was “a missed opportunity for Japan’s distilleries,” according to a Yahoo writer, interest in Yamazaki 55 does not seem to have waned.

A bottle of Yamazaki 55 is worth anywhere from $ 27,000 to $ 60,000, depending on who you believe. But at auction in 2020, a single bottle sold for $ 795,000, setting a new record for a bottle of Japanese whiskey.

“There are rare bottles of Japanese whiskey and then there are rare bottles of Japanese whiskey,” says a story from The Whiskey Wash. Yamazaki 55 is printed in italics.

It smells of sandalwood and fruits and has a “sweet, slightly bitter and woody palate and a slightly bitter, but sweet and rich finish,” according to a statement by Suntory. We take them at their word.

Tei-An is located at 1722 Routh St., Dallas. It will be closed on November 9, 2021 during a Yamazaki whiskey tasting and dinner. Tickets are priced at $ 5,555 per person.
