It looks like Houston’s nightmare experience with Chef David Chang’s Fuku sandwich shop wasn’t enough to keep him from planning new locations across Texas. On Thursday, the prominent restaurateur opened another outpost for his ghost kitchen concept Fuku with a fried chicken sandwich in Central East Austin.
The Fuku site in Houston took orders for Chang’s famous fried chicken sandwiches with habanero salt, chicken fingers and waffle fries in April. But the experiment turned into a disaster for hungry Houstonians, who had three hours of waiting, missing items, and cold or raw food when the deliveries actually arrived. Customers at the Dallas outpost reportedly had similar issues, and reviews from two months ago show that things haven’t gotten much better.
That didn’t deter Fuku CEO Alex Munoz-Suarez, who told Eater Houston in April that the order volume was “significantly higher than expected” and contributed to the long waiting times and quality problems. But he promised to fix things.
Chang, the chef behind New York’s famous Momofuku Noodle Bar and Milk Bar, opened the first Fuku in New York City in 2015 based on a secret Momofuku menu item. Since then, Chang Fuku has expanded to Washington DC, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Boston, Philadelphia, and more.
Fuku is still available in two ghost kitchens in Houston and can be delivered via DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates, and Uber Eats. Order at your own risk.
