Diggs keeps INT roll going with Dallas, getting 2 this time
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Trevon Diggs already had the interception that made him the first Dallas player since the 1970 merger with at least one pick in each of the first four games.
It turns out that the second year cornerback didn’t end in the Cowboys’ 36-28 win over Carolina on Sunday.
Diggs won a tug-of-war with top Panthers receiver DJ Moore for his second takeout and single-handedly extended the club’s NFL-best streak of multi-takeaway games to eight since last season.
The Cowboys are up to 10 takeaways after starting the day leading the league in that category. Diggs alone has the chance to end the weekend with more takeaways than about half of the 32 teams.
Best cornerback in the NFL? Diggs has the voice of quarterback Dak Prescott after joining linebacker Chuck Howley (1968) as the only Dallas player with five interceptions in four games.
“Turn on the tape,” said Prescott. “Watch the guys he chases week after week, the best player. He’s a guy I’ve been competing against since spring, I know the standard he adheres to and he’ll keep getting better. “
Diggs showed signs of high-quality choice as a second-round player from Alabama last year, with the 2020 All-Pro Buffalo recipient’s younger brother Stefon Diggs getting two interceptions in his eighth game and ending his rookie year with three.
Now Everson Walls’ 40-year club record of 11 could be at stake. Last week, Diggs joined Walls as the only cowboys to intercept each of the first three games. Now he’s out of walls.
“I really don’t expect things I do,” said Diggs. “Things like interceptions and stuff, I really just go out there and play. I don’t even remember high school or college, I just want to go out and just play and run. “
Diggs waited for Sam Darnold’s throw the first time it was intercepted. On the second, he jumped a short distance to Moore and juggled the ball when he and the receiver fell to the ground together. The officer emphatically signaled Diggs as the winner.
“I love the challenge,” said Diggs. “It’s mano y mano. Who is better at the end of the day. And I like to compete. I like to play every game, so I want to see who is better. “
Prescott remembers one training camp last year when Diggs intercepted him doing two-minute consecutive exercises.
“He will continue to be intercepted because of the way he is learning how to approach the game,” said Prescott. “He’s an instinctive player and obviously has hands. He’s an old receiver, so he dresses up a lot of the boys. “
The first interception was Cedrick Wilson’s 23-yard touchdown catch for a 33:14 lead. The second ended with a field goal for a 36-14 edge. The cowboys ran out of time after the second of Darnold’s two TD litters in the fourth quarter to Moore.
“He made two good games,” said Darnold. “Of course these are balls that I shouldn’t be throwing. He was just waiting for the second one. With the first one he just read in my eyes the whole time and took a good break. “
Diggs could be on the way to breaking more records.
