ETBU collects Hurricane Ida donations | Lifestyle
East Texas Baptist University raised funds for Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief to help people affected by Hurricane Ida in Louisiana.
Items collected during the fundraiser included bottled water and gatorade bottles, infant and adult diapers, baby wipes, cleaning supplies, laundry items, and stationery.
“While Hurricane Ida did not directly affect our campus, it is a good reminder to take care of our neighbors and to love our neighbors well,” said Holly Edwards, vice president of student engagement and dean of studies at ETBU. “We find it a privilege to pray and pay attention to those who need it, but then provide an opportunity to put that prayer into action and provide resources. That is what we are called to do; to enter into these moments of need and loss and to be the hands and feet of Christ. “
The donated items were loaded onto and delivered to the Texas Baptist Men (TBM) warehouse in Dallas. TBM will then take the donated items to affected areas in Louisiana, where TBM volunteers will meet the needs after the storm. They also supplied half a load of water and are preparing half a load of detergent.
“The ministry has always been at the heart of East Texas Baptist University and its student body,” said Mickey Lenamon, executive director and CEO of Texas Baptist Men. “This tremendous flow of donations reflects that spirit once more. These basic needs will help families in southern Louisiana take their first steps towards recovery from Hurricane Ida. Thank you, ETBU, for partnering with TBM to bring help, hope and healing to people in their most difficult days. “
In addition to the ETBU congregation, both Marshall Kroger and Dairy Queen stepped in to help with a large water donation and get the word out in the local media.
“I am so grateful for the continued partnership between ETBU and the Marshall Community as we want to help not only Marshall and Harrison Counties, but also our Louisiana neighbors who were so hard hit by Hurricane Ida,” said ETBU director of the Great Commission program said Lisa Seeley. “The love and generosity shown to our neighbors in this time of crisis embodies the story of the good Samaritan.”
