General Motors and AT&T Set Automotive Connectivity Benchmark with 5G
DALLAS and DETROIT, Aug. 19, 2021 / PRNewswire / – General Motors and AT&T * will provide 5G cellular connectivity to millions of GM vehicles that roll off the assembly line over the next decade The United States. GM and AT&T are working together to set the standard for automotive connectivity with a fifth generation cellular network architecture to meet the demands of an all-electric and autonomous future.
GM and AT&T are working together to build a powerful 5G core network that will set a new standard. Network improvements include:
- Improved street-centered coverage
- Faster, higher quality music and video downloads
- Faster, more reliable, and secure over-the-air software updates
- Faster navigation, maps and voice services
5G connectivity will be available for the first time in selected 2024 vehicles. Additionally, through GM’s fifth generation network, the current 4G LTE-equipped 2019 model year and newer vehicles will experience faster connectivity speeds and many of the same performance benefits of future 5G-equipped vehicles. Current owners of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac in the US with 4G LTE-enabled 2019 model year and newer vehicles will easily migrate to the new network infrastructure as it becomes available.
This launch is part of GM and AT & T’s broader strategy to bring the world’s largest fleet of 5G-enabled vehicles to market, and the culmination of a two-year collaboration, including test drives of connected vehicles at GM’s 5G proving ground in Milford, Michigan.
AT&T has the most reliable 5G network in the country, 1 covering more than 250 million people across the country. AT&T invested from 2016 to 2020 more than $ 110 billion in its wireless and wired networks, including capital investments and wireless spectrum acquisitions and operations.
GM provides OnStar and Connected Services2 to more than 16 million customers in the US and Canada. Since the introduction of 4G LTE in 2014, GM owners have consumed more than 171 million gigabytes of data across brands, equivalent to nearly 5.7 billion hours of music streamed or more than 716 million hours of video streaming.
To support GM’s rapid innovation and delivery of next-generation connected vehicle solutions, AT&T and Microsoft are bringing the speed and reliability of AT & T’s 5G network together with Microsoft’s scalable and secure cloud services.
The improvements to 4G LTE and 5G networks will lay the foundation for the future of GM’s growing over-the-air update strategy, which is an element of the automaker’s overall innovation and growth plan. With more advanced features, robust software, and faster download speeds, more data is available to provide a more convenient customer experience. GM’s fifth generation network will also provide a strong foundation for the advancement of its technologies such as Super Cruise and its Vehicle Intelligence Platform.
