Going outside the Loop might be risky per this Dallas news roundup

This summary of the Dallas news is event driven. There’s a partial highway lock, a charity event, and a podcast event. There is good news for Dallas College students too.

This is what happens in Dallas this week:

Autobahn closure

If you’re thinking of venturing outside the loop, this is not the weekend: the 635 freeway will be closed again this weekend, even though it only goes west and only one exit, so keep your shirt on.

All lanes on the 635 west on Royal Lane and Miller Road will be closed from July 9-10. The closure is necessary in order to carry out a partial demo of the Royal Lane flyover bridge.

Royal Lane Cross Street on I-635 will also be closed. Eastbound 635 on Royal Lane will continue to be open, but it will be reduced to one lane on both nights.

Part 1 is Friday evening, starts at 8 p.m. and ends at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Part 2 is Saturday evening and ends on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Dallas College

Dallas College will reopen pantries on July 12th on each of its seven campuses.

The on-campus pantries were first introduced in 2019 to support the basic needs of students and the community. They were closed during COVID-19 but have now been replenished and ready to return to serving students and communities.

“We are very excited to reopen the pantries on each campus to give our students the opportunity to receive basic needs and food,” said a statement from the college. “It’s much bigger than offering a meal here and there. It’s about breaking this cycle by removing the barriers so that students can achieve their educational goals and support themselves. “

Jeff Fest

On Sunday, July 11th, a concert called “Jeff Fest” will raise funds for Jeff Saenz, a Dallas musician and studio owner who is recovering from a near-fatal electrocution. Saenz came into contact with a 400-volt city power line that crashed in his yard and was seriously injured. More than 25 percent of his body suffered third and fourth degree burns.

Saenz, who played in a number of bands before opening the Modern Electric recording studio, is recovering in the hospital, where he underwent six surgeries, including the amputation of his left forearm and entire right arm.

Jeff Fest will include appearances by Cauthen, David Ramirez, Matthew Logan Vasquez of Delta Spirit, Jonathan Tyler, Thomas Csorba and Sir Woman on two stages at The Double Wide in Dallas. Donations can also be made at www.jeffsaenzrecoveryproject.com.
