Gov. Abbott: Another special session for COVID vaccine mandates
When asked if he would call a fourth special session, Governor Greg Abbott told the WFAA, “There’s always a special session for everything.
DALLAS – Governor Greg Abbott has not taken a fourth special legislative session off the table in Texas.
He spoke to the media shortly before a lecture in Dallas on Tuesday evening.
When asked if he would call lawmakers back to Austin to discuss COVID vaccine mandates, the WFAA governor said, “There’s always a special session for everything.”

In October, Governor Abbott issued an executive order banning companies from using COVID vaccines.
He also ordered lawmakers, then in their third special session in Austin, to pass laws banning COVID vaccine mandates.
Bills were tabled but none passed before the meeting ended.
“There is always the possibility of a special session for everything.”

Abbott’s order conflicts with new federal regulations due to go into effect in January.
According to OSHA regulations, companies with more than 100 employees must have a COVID vaccination mandate.
Workers must either be fully vaccinated or follow the mandatory weekly COVID tests.
Texas companies are now trying to tackle the two conflicting guidelines.

While federal regulations are replacing a state order, a judge has put the Biden administration’s plan on hold following complaints from several states over the constitutionality of the regulations.
Abbott spoke at a gala at the Goodman Institute, a North Texas think tank.
During his speech, the Governor touted Texas as a place for businesses to flock because they have the freedom to do their business as they see fit.

That was a stumbling block for the vaccine mandate laws that were tabled during the third special session.
As the bills debated in the House and Senate, lawmakers on both sides wondered whether preventing corporations from introducing a vaccine requirement would go against Texas claims of a business-friendly atmosphere.
