Here’s how residents in one North Texas city can rid themselves of skunks

Southlake offers advice on how to deal with skunks, which are nocturnal and tend to spray others (especially pets) in the warmer months.

On October 25th, the Regional Animal Services in Keller is holding an event where people learn how to coexist with the critters.

However, should residents have a desire to catch the wildlife, they can do so by checking out a trap from the basement organization for up to 10 working days, according to the Southlake website. Residents can also try to trap the animal in a private trap. Or, a member of the Keller Regional Animal Service can collect the animal for a fee of $ 30.

Other tips to help prevent skunks or wildlife from settling on your property include:

  • Eliminate outdoor sources of food and water.
  • Do not leave pet food outside overnight.
  • Keep the soil free of bird seed.
  • Secure trash cans with tightly fitting lids.
  • Don’t leave your garage door open or cracked at night with pet food on the floor inside.
  • Lock pet doors at night.
  • Keep your garden clean.
  • Cover or mount the underside of decks and sheds.
  • Do not leave the brush piled up for long periods of time.
  • Check the condition of your chimney cover and keep the chimney closed when the chimney is not in use.
  • Block or repair damage to the eaves or soffit of your home.
  • Do not let cats or small dogs roam free without you being around.

Skunks also seem to have their own problems this time of year.

“They get extremely fat in late autumn,” according to the TPWD.
