Houston’s only Frank Lloyd Wright home quietly sells for $2.7 million
Houston architecture lovers who coveted the city’s only Frank Lloyd home are out of luck. The house known as that William Thaxton House, tacitly sold in the Spring Branch / Bunker Hill area for $ 2.7 million.
The coveted and admired home originally launched in August with a list price of $ 3.1 million. Compass agent Bill Dodson represented the new, unnamed buyers.
Nestled in Bunker Hill Villages, the home at 12020 High Oak St. is part of the Usonian Home series by Wright. The iconic architect designed these homes, widely known for their open floor plans, specifically for families looking for large meeting spaces.
Similar to their earlier Prairie-style cousins, who were mostly built around the turn of the century, Usonian homes also featured a fireplace as a focal point; 12020 Tall Oaks Street has two.
12020 Tall Oaks St. sits on 51,727 square feet (1.9 acres) of fenced property and extends for more than 8,000 square feet, nestled in the outdoor area as if it had grown out of the ground.
This characteristic connection of a house with the surrounding natural space creates a harmony with nature – a trademark of Wright’s work.
Built in 1955 for Houston insurance manager William Thaxton, the house has undergone renovations over the past half century, including an addition in 1995. Thaxton’s house is exquisite in design and bathed in natural light. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto a central courtyard with a sunken pool, the angles of which mesh with those of the house.
A master bedroom has two entrances that open onto the courtyard. Two chimneys sit in the spaces between the rooms and cleverly bring them together. Meanwhile, a wide pool anchors the back yard, which serves as a site. Countless windows line the exterior and give indoor residents and outdoor loungers a feeling from the outside in.
This Wright house is a significant piece of Texan architecture – Frank Lloyd Wright only built two other houses in Texas, in Dallas and Amarillo.
