How a Mansfield sushi restaurant joined a viral TikTok trend
A viral TikTok trend popping up in sushi restaurants around the world hit Mansfield.
Guests put their phones on sushi conveyor belts – usually reserved for bringing sushi right to your table – to record videos of other guests, according to a report in Newsweek.
TikTok users in New York City, Los Angeles, Japan, and Mansfield have joined the trend.
In May, TikTok user Sadia put her cell phone on a conveyor belt at Akarii Revolving Sushi in Mansfield, the story says.
The clip that Sadia titled “We’re putting our phone on the sushi conveyor belt lol” has been viewed 3.5 million times.
As her phone snaked through the restaurant, the video captured a little girl saying “hello” into the camera, confusing customers, dancing staff and sushi rolls being served.
A host at Akarii said employees and customers alike could laugh at the video.
On TikTok, commentators describe the videos as “cinematic” and like scenes “from a movie”.
However, the response is not always positive. After an incident in Japan, people called the conveyor belt camera an invasion of privacy, Newsweek said, and one sushi chain even banned filming or photography.
