How can we ensure the future of Dallas is bright?
Here is the Spanish version of this editorial.
Dear Readers,
Is Dallas a great city to live and work in, and to raise a family? The way to the answer is as complex and multifaceted as the citizens who live here.
I want to draw your attention to an important initiative our newsroom will launch this month: State of the City. This initiative will help our readers get to the heart of this important question.
My editorial team and I felt that this critical moment in this city and region required taking a step back from daily reporting in order to delve deeply into topics that can help us all assess the performance of this city and region . We want to give our readers an objective assessment, celebrate successes, but also show where we still sin. And just as important is that we look for solutions that can make this city better.
Our goal is simple: We want to provide you with information so that you can decide for yourself whether the city and region are on the right track. We know that for many of our readers, success depends on who you are and where you live. We also know that we all suffer if we don’t tackle important issues together.
Over the next few months we will explore six important facets that shape our city and region: public safety, public education, the economy, health care, social justice, as well as housing and homelessness. Rather than summarize this coverage in one issue of the Dallas Morning News, we’ll have six parts in the newspaper and on dallasnews.com.
We will use a mix of quantitative and qualitative data to cover these six areas and we will find unique stories of people and organizations making a difference in our community.
In addition to impartial news coverage, we will cover these topics on our opinion pages. Our editorial board and experts will contribute with analyzes and comments on the performance of our city in these areas. You may or may not agree. But our intent is to encourage healthy conversations and explore different perspectives.
With the local elections on May 1st, we will have some new leaders on the Dallas City Council who can influence the direction of our city and region. As we make this transition in leadership, it is a great time for residents to learn and empower themselves to get involved.
We hope that by the end of this series you will feel like a better informed citizen, one who better understands the strengths and weaknesses of Dallas and the region, and that it inspires robust and productive conversations across our city. Each topic we cover has its own unique complexity, but explored together they tell the story of our city in a way that allows us to see where we are now and measure success in the future and to eat.
Not only do I hope that you are taking the time to read our State of the City series, but I hope it inspires you to take action and commit yourself in every possible way to a bright future.
