‘Inevitably’ Everyone Will Need Booster Shots – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
The U.S. government’s foremost infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday that an additional COVID-19 booster vaccination is recommended “soon” for previously vaccinated people with weakened immune systems.
In an interview on the show “TODAY”, Fauci said it is becoming increasingly clear that many of these patients are still susceptible to COVID after vaccination because their bodies produce little to no antibodies for months after receiving the vaccinations. He said the purpose of the booster shot was to bring her level of protection to where it should be.
When asked if the general public would need one, Fauci said: “At the moment we won’t be giving boosters other than the immunocompromised.” However, he admitted that “there will inevitably come a time when we need to get boosts” because “no vaccine, at least not within this category, will offer unlimited protection”.
People have weakened immune systems for a variety of reasons, including organ transplants, cancer, or other medical conditions. Fauci said that for other vaccinated groups, such as the elderly, data will be collected to see if or when their protection drops “below critical levels” and “then you will hear of boosters being introduced” for others.
The Food and Drug Administration stands ready to change emergency approvals for Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines Thursday to allow people with compromised immune systems to receive a third dose, two sources familiar with the plans told NBC News.
The move would come after an advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention met in July and pushed for additional doses for immunocompromised adults.
On Wednesday, California authorities announced that all teachers and staff in the public school system will be vaccinated or have weekly coronavirus tests.
