Innovative Houston brain injury rehabilitation center breaks ground

The Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute recently broke ground for a 64,000-square-foot research and rehabilitation center in Nassau Bay’s Space Park near NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Nassau Bay City Council approved the project last year, which can accommodate up to 40 inpatients and space for outpatient services. Around 150 employees will work at the facility, which is slated to open in early 2023.

In addition to private inpatient rooms, the new center will include a therapy room, an outdoor therapy courtyard and family apartments. The facility’s “urban house” design will highlight natural colors and textures to stimulate the patient’s senses during the recovery process.

The 40 or so people who attended the groundbreaking ceremony included representatives from Moody Neuro, Houston-based architecture firm Kirksey Architecture, Galveston-based general contractor JW Kelso Construction, and Dallas-based project manager Pritchard Associates.

The Moody Neurorehabilitation Institute treats people with brain injuries. The non-profit organization operates a rehabilitation center in Galveston and one other Lubbock, as well as long-term care facilities in both cities. In fiscal 2019, the organization had sales of nearly $ 27.8 million and more than $ 15.1 million in expenses.

Philanthropist Robert Moody Sr., retired chairman of Moody National Bank, based in Galveston, founded what is now Moody Neuro in 1982 after his son Russell suffered severe traumatic brain injury in a car accident.
