Introducing The Dallas Morning News Assisted Living Guide
Life is filled with many phases that bring difficult decisions that are of great importance to us and to those we love most. Many of us or our loved ones will come to a point in life where we will have to leave home and go to an assisted living facility or nursing home with more direct care.
The Dallas Morning News editors worked with our product development team for several months to develop a guide that we hope will help families make these decisions.
Our assisted living guide, released today and available at dallasnews.com/assisted-living-guide, covers more than 800 facilities in North Texas. It provides vital information from government databases in an easily searchable format about these homes’ inspection records as well as their capacity, the types of services they offer, and whether they accept Medicaid.
The guide, made possible by a grant from the Google News Initiative, is a starting point to understand whether a home near you is the right place for you or a loved one. Here you can ask questions about a facility’s safety record and how it responded to complaints or inspections. The information can help you determine if the home is big enough or small enough to provide the care you want. And you can find out at a glance whether the costs are completely out of your pocket.
The final decision should of course be made through personal visits to the facilities to understand what they offer and whether their services are suitable for you.
But when you make such an important decision, you should be armed with information. We hope this guide provides that empowerment.
