Irving Animal Shelter cuts hours as labor shortage continues

Irving Animal Services will close its shelter three days a week due to staff shortages.

The new timetable, which comes into force on Wednesday, only applies to public operating hours. The animals in the shelter will continue to be looked after on a daily basis. Animal service officials will continue to respond to calls seven days a week, including out-of-hours emergencies.

Corporations and other organizations in North Texas and across the country are struggling to hire enough staff to keep up with demand.

In Irving, the shelter is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays. The opening times are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The shelter is located at 4140 Valley View Lane.

The positions available range from part-time to full-time with different levels of experience and training.

Animal care technicians make about $ 15 to $ 20 an hour, and animal service workers make about $ 22 to $ 29 an hour.

The DFW Humane Society, which works from the same facility, is also closed on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays.
