Letters to the Editor – Postal Service, State Fair, concert reviews, coverage of women sports
The post is already slow
Re: “Give DeJoy a Chance – The Postal System Needs Reform and Speed for Reliability is Good Business,” Wednesday editorials.
Just sent a certified letter with acknowledgment of receipt to Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday. The delivery date is October 12th – a total of seven days. Now it’s 1,027 miles from my city. You can get there in 15 hours by car or fly there in two hours. That’s slow service, and Louis DeJoy has to slow it down even more.

State-fair food prices
Re: “State Fair is ready for you – 24 days of food, rides and other fun start now”, Guide Story from September 24th.
The author quoted State Fair President Mitchell Glieber as saying that while the grocery vouchers cost twice as much as they were in 2019, “… it doesn’t mean the items cost twice as much; it’s just a change in the value of the coupon. “
He is technically correct. A corn dog that cost 8 coupons ($ 4) at the last State Fair was only 7 coupons ($ 7) this year. I saw a similar rise in prices for all foods. An ear of corn for $ 7? A $ 5 ice cream parlor? Are they really trying to stop people from going to Mass? Or is it okay now to massage the prices because they can?

Cheers to paid vacation
As a Vietnam Veteran and Retired City Worker, over 31 years old with the City of Dallas, I applaud the extra paid vacation. Better late than never.

There is one thing we will never agree on
I am sure we will overcome the current dispute we have with our French allies over the sale of submarines to Australia. I’m less sure we’ll ever agree with our French friends that Jerry Lewis was a comedic genius.

Bring back the reviews
I remember when The Dallas Morning News wrote reviews of concerts and bands. I enjoyed reading them, either to see what I missed at the concert or if I agree with the reviewers.
An iconic band opened the concert season – Guns and Roses at the American Airlines Center. Apart from three small paragraphs and three short sentences about the band, the article was mainly about masks. I wanted to read such a review of the band and not some political masks stuff that appears in your newspaper almost every day.
Do you think you can again write reviews of shows and concerts that the general public would love to read?

Where are the women?
Come on, Dallas Morning News. You have to be better You have to be better for your wives, daughters, and granddaughters.
I have my sports department from September 26th to October 3rd. On September 26, there were no pictures of athletes on 12 sports pages. September 27th: zero images on 10 pages. September 28th: Zero pictures on 10 pages. September 29th: a picture of an athlete on page 7 of 8 pages. September 30th: zero images on 10 pages. Oct 1: a picture on page 4 of 10 pages. Oct. 2: one picture on 12 pages. And to my utter dismay and disgust, on October 3rd, 22 sports pages had zero athlete pictures and 43 male athlete pictures. Yes sir. 43.
The last time I heard was that women are still allowed to exercise. Or has Governor Greg Abbott overturned this too?

The name of the team will change
Although both the Dallas Cowboys football team and the Cleveland Indians baseball team won their games on Sunday, it was a sad and memorable day for sports fans. Cleveland came to town to end their season. They’ll be back in the future, but never again will fans be able to put down roots on the same day for both the Cowboys and the Indians. So sad. Too bad.

Also check out the COVID-19 score
Has anyone watched high school or college football over the weekend? Has anyone noticed any alarming behavior? Tens of thousands of feverish fans crowd together in a stadium and cheer for their favorite team! No masks. No social distancing. Elbow to elbow. From Florida to California to New England to Texas. We are back!
We have seen the delta resurgence of COVID-19. Let’s take a look at the new statistics after each game: final score; total yards won; Number of sales; Percent of COVID-19 cases; Number of COVID hospital admissions and game-related deaths.
I’m a big football fan, but at what price do we let our play fever overrule life? Stay tuned.

Happy Birthday Mom
My mother, Linda Behr, has been a subscriber to the Dallas Morning News for over 40 years. She enjoys writing letters to the editor and is published every now and then. She always shares the published letter with her friends.
She turned 70 on October 5th and we (her family) just send a letter to the editorial staff to wish her a happy 70th birthday.
