New documentary ‘Fruitcake Fraud’ tells story of millions swindled at Collin Street Bakery
Remember when an employee at Collin Street Bakery – the Texas store famous for its fruit cakes – was caught stealing nearly $ 17 million from the store in 2013? The film version isn’t here yet. (Pre-COVID, Will Ferrell was on board. Now the status of the film is debatable.) But while you wait, Discovery + has released a new documentary special about what’s going on in Corsicana called Fruitcake Fraud. It landed on the streaming service earlier this month, in time for the mail-order cake big season.
“It’s definitely the strangest case I’ve ever worked on,” said FBI agent Christine Edson on the show, which airs on Wednesday. Over the course of 90 minutes, she and others look back on nearly decades of embezzling Sandy Jenkins, the bakery’s accountant, to promote an opulent lifestyle of expensive cars, high-end watches and jewelry, and a house in Santa Fe Luxury travel for him and his wife Kay.
