New Yorker brings real-deal bagels and Italian bread to Preston Center

A new bagel shop with deep roots in New York is coming to Dallas: Called Sclafanis New York bagels and bread, there will be a Bakery Cafe and Cafe opening at the Preston Center at 6135 Luther Ln. be in the last Gather Kitchen.

Founder Chris Sclafani is currently renovating the space and is aiming for an opening in January 2022.

Sclafani serves New York-style bagels, Italian bread, sandwiches, and coffee with recipes that go back decades. His family has owned bakeries in New York’s Little Italy, and Sclafani previously opened a similar concept in Virginia (which is still open but under different ownership).

“My family has been doing this for 100 years since they came from Italy and settled in New York,” he says. “You are a baker by birth. You started baking Italian bread and bread products in Little Italy. Bagels started after my parents divorced and my father married into a Jewish family – merged bagels and Italian bread and moved away wholesale to a retail store. “

Sclafani moved to Virginia to attend seminary school and opened the first Sclafani’s in 2016, raving about its bagels, some in trendy flavors, with a crispy crust and chewy interior.

He moved to Dallas to be closer to his children who live in the area and go to school / work.

Bagels are having a moment in Dallas, and a handful of artisanal operators like Starship Bagels and Lenore’s are trying hard to bring a more authentic bagel to Dallas.

Sclafani is thrilled with its location in the Preston Center, which has some concepts going in and out through no fault of its own, including The Hospitality Sweet, Peak Wood Fired Grill, and Cafe Expresso a few years earlier.

Never mind, they are bagels for victory.

“This will be my flagship location,” says Sclafani. “You go to the store and we will be as good as the stores in New York and New Jersey. We cook and bake and the water is filtered to mimic the water we have.” Back at home.”

They’ll be making Italian bread too, and the location has a full kitchen so he’ll make things like meatballs and sausages that make great sandwiches.

Last but not least, the shop will have a unique high-end copper espresso machine for cappuccino and other espresso drinks.

Sclafani creates beautiful spaces by using old and reclaimed materials like bricks and like the 1912 cash register he once used in an earlier room to approach a bakery in Little Italy where it all started.
