North Texas BBQ: Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ joints list
TARRANT COUNTY, Texas – Every four years, Texas Monthly and BBQ Editor Daniel Vaughn publishes the list of the 50 best BBQ spots in Texas.
The last list was published in 2017. The new list will appear on Monday, October 18, 2021.
“When barbecuing is as booming as it is now, reducing it to 50 is no easy task. I don’t envy (Vaughn’s) job, ”said Brandon Hurtado of Hurtado Barbecue.
“(Making The List) is something everyone thinks of at least once, isn’t it?” Trevor Selling from Brix Barbecue said. “To say I haven’t lost any sleep in the last two or three weeks would be a lie.”
“Daniel Vaughn has been here a few times. I’m confident, but there is always a thought in your head, ‘What if?’ ”Said Derek Crudgington of Derek Allan’s Texas Barbecue.
Hurtado Barbecue in Arlington and Brix Barbecue and Derek Allan’s in Fort Worth all opened after the latest Texas Monthly Top 50 list was published.
In 2017, Texas Monthly ranked Snow’s BBQ in Lexington first; Franklin Barbecue in Austin, runner-up; and Cattleack Barbecue in Dallas, third.
But the Dallas-Fort Worth barbecue scene has changed since 2017.
“DFW didn’t have much representation beyond Cattleack, but that is about to change,” said Hurtado. “I feel like I am at Goldee’s, Derek Allan, Heim Barbecue, Hutchins, Dayne’s – things are going to change.”
Hurtado opened his barbecue place in Arlington in February 2020 with Mexicue or Texas Barbecue with “a Mexican twist,” he said. The opening of a second location in Little Elm is planned.
“It’s not just a food blog or anything,” Hurtado said of the top 50 list. “In our eyes it is a truly recognized list made up of people who eat, sleep and breathe crickets just like us.”
Meanwhile, Brix Barbeque – named after Sales’s dog – plans to open its first “Brix and Mortar” on S. Main Street in Fort Worth this spring. They currently operate from an Airstream trailer – called SmokeStream – which is across from HopFusion Ale Works.
“It’s to make the list,” said Sales. “There are many other good lists and we are always happy to be included in other things. But the Texas Monthly Top 50 list is the best of the best. “
Sales said his “day job” was selling cable and wire products. And he learned a lot from the Fort Worth barbecue community.
“Chris (Magallanes) and Ernie (Morales), the guys from Panther City BBQ, just down the street, they’re great guys. They essentially taught me how to smoke a brisket. I respect these guys very much, ”said Sales. “If they’re not on the list – something like Dayne’s – I’d be confused because they bring out great things.”
Just down the street from SmokeStream is Derek Allan’s Texas Barbecue, which opened in 2019.
“Oh, that would mean a lot. It’s been a goal of mine since our food trailer, ”said Crudgington. “I studied Texas Monthly and Daniel Vaughn and everything he’s been doing for years. Even the first encounter with him was great. I still have his picture over there with me. “
Crudgington serves all Wagyu beef and is open early for breakfast and serves brisket biscuits.
“People really go out of their way every week to get on the list. It’s the best places in the country, ”said Crudgington.
