What He Did: Gayton stormed 182 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries, averaging 15.2 yards per carry, when Celina rolled past Aubrey 34-0 in Class 4A Division II Region I last Friday at Apogee Stadium in Denton. Gayton’s touchdown runs went 56, 39 and 21 yards, with the latter giving Celina a 31-0 lead with 1:28 in the third quarter.

The stats: Gayton has hit 1,492 yards and 16 touchdowns from 170 carries, averaging 8.8 yards per carry. He helped Celina (12-1) – ranked 3rd in the Associated Press 4A-II state poll – this Friday at Children’s Health Stadium in Prosper. to move into the semi-finals against Gilmer (13-1) in second place.

Who is he: A 5-foot-9, 185-pound junior running back. Gayton was promoted from Celina’s junior varsity during the 2020 midseason. In seven games, he stormed 753 yards and six touchdowns while helping the Bobcats advance to the 4A-II Region I final.

He said it: “My favorite game on Friday was the first touchdown run. That really got things rolling and got everyone in high spirits. … In the offseason I focused on being more patient with my teammates and my line. I used to think too much and think too far ahead. Now I’m more patient with following my teammates’ blocks and the holes the line opens … I had to work on improving my shape with my arms and balance. I used to run with my arms wide to the side like the Hulk. … I do more early morning workouts. I get up at 4 a.m., have breakfast, work out and then eat a sandwich. “

Coach said: “What I like best about Gabe as a player is his running style. He’s very aggressive and very violent in the way he moves his arms and lifts his knees up. He worked in the spring and summer and is now a very explosive runner, ”said Celina trainer Bill Elliott.

Did you know: Gayton started playing soccer when he was eight and lived in Erie, Pennsylvania. He played free security before switching to running back the following year when he lived in Olean, NY … Tikayl lived with five foster families before Stephanie Reisdorph took her on in 2018. Reisdorph adopted her in 2020 and that same year they moved from Olean to Celina. … Gayton’s favorite class at school is English … Gayton said when the football opportunity isn’t there, he wants to go to college in Texas, preferably one nearby. He is planning to study economics or communication sciences. His dream job is running a company that helps disadvantaged children get access to better sports facilities and coaches … Gayton’s favorite food is New York Strip Streak (medium rare) with a loaded baked potato or mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, broccoli and water … His favorite athletes are former NFL running backs Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks, Emmitt Smith of the Dallas Cowboys and Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions.
