Pickard Chilton willl design downtown Dallas’s newest office highrise
Pickard Chilton, a global architecture firm headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut, has announced that it will lead the design of a 38-story freeway-adjacent office tower in downtown Dallas. The Field Street Tower, the high-rise developed by Hillwood Urban with a height of 200 meters, has been added to the skyline of Texass’ third largest city for 30 years as the tallest office tower. According to Pickard Chilton, the glass-encased structure will serve as the “new centerpiece of the city’s skyline”.
The last two commercial skyscrapers built in Dallas to rise above 600 feet are the Chase Tower by SOM (738 feet) and the Comerica Bank Tower (787 feet) designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee, originally used as Momentum Place was known. Both postmodern giants were completed in 1987. The tallest skyscraper in Dallas as a whole is the Bank of America Plaza, designed by JPJ Architects, which opened in 1985 and towers 290 meters above the Civic Garden in the center of downtown.
Pickard Chilton Tower rises above Woodall Rodgers Freeway on 2012 N. Field Street near the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and will comprise 520,000 square feet of office space on 23 floors. Below the office floors there are 7,500 square meters of ground-level retail space and a breathtaking 13 levels with above-ground parking spaces. (It’s the car-crazy Dallas, after all.) Accordingly, the Field Street Tower will be right next to the Klyde Warren Park freeway extension from OJB Landscape Architecture. In a beautiful continuity, the company that won the National Design Award was also commissioned to monitor the landscape of the new tower. BOKA Powell is acting as the architect of the project.
Set apart from its similarly lanky neighbors by a powerful housing and a series of balconies protruding from the upper floors as the building “rises and rotates,” the Field Street Tower is prominently positioned above Woodall Rodgers Freeway on the edge of the Established downtown. as the “new gateway to Dallas,” according to a press release from Pickard Chilton.
“The Field Street Tower forms the gateway to the city center and will create unique views and experiences from inside and outside, while prioritizing the health and well-being of its residents,” said Design Director Jon Pickard.
The planned features and amenities of the LEED Silver-Targeting Tower, which puts a COVID-era focus on the health and well-being of residents, include a sky lobby in the 16th-modern conference center; a dizzying half a hectare of open-air green space called “Sky Park” at 16. A café-bar, retail space and a restaurant with outdoor seating are also planned. Flexible office floor panels range from approximately 18,000 to 25,000 square feet with 10 foot ceilings.
Although no main tenants have been announced, D Magazine speculates that the Field Street Tower could serve as an ideal (partial) home for the Goldman Sachs Group, which is currently seeking at least 1 million square feet of office space for its North Texas campus. Goldman Sachs’ Dallas offices have been in the Trammel Center since 2018. The Field Street Tower is expected to open in 2024.
