See award-winning architect Max Levy’s respect for the trees in this Greenway Parks home he designed
Award-winning Dallas architect Max Levy designed this house in Greenway Parks with a view of nature. The challenge of building in 2017 was to come up with a design that left plenty of space for the five oak trees already on the property.
“Respecting those trees also meant orchestrating the floor plan so that the view from the house could enjoy every tree,” Levy said via email.
The home at 5543 Drane Drive in Dallas is 6,577 square feet with five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and a half bathroom. The modern design plays with the natural elements of the property, with large windows overlooking the trees and the surrounding green spaces. Levy also focused on natural materials inside the house, with white oak floors and honed limestone. One of the most unique elements of the home is a roof porch that sits in the canopy of the oak trees. The room is only accessible by outside stairs, and Levy said it had a “meditative” feel – there is an outside fireplace and bespoke, built-in candle holders.
A meditative oasis is a theme throughout the design, and Levy – dubbed “the poet laureate of Dallas architecture” by critic Mark Lamster – added a series of fountains around the property to drown out the noise of the city.
The main living area of the house includes the kitchen, dining room and living area, all of which are in the same light-flooded room. The space feels spacious and natural, with windows on two sides and white oak on the ceiling, kitchen cabinets, and floor. The dining area has a 16-foot window seat next to the dining table that’s bathed in sunlight.

The master suite and a guest suite are on the first floor of the house and the three remaining bedrooms are on the second level. In the hallway on the second level there is a window seat, in the children’s area and oak sliding doors can lock the bench – Levy says it feels like a train compartment and is a popular place to stay overnight. The playroom on the second level offers a close-up view of the tree tops through large windows.
Wendy Konradi designed the interior of the house, and landscape architect David Hocker brought in natural Texan plants to fill in the exterior design. The house was built by Stephen Hardy.
The house also has a pool, gardens and outdoor terraces. There are 10 geothermal wells on the property that help with heating and cooling, which ultimately lowers the cost of utility bills. With just under 7,000 square meters, that’s no small matter.
The home is listed by Douglas Newby of Douglas Newby & Associates for $ 5,995,000.
