Student Performance Data; Teacher Workload Both Show Significant Challenges for Schools – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Teachers’ jobs are getting tougher and the data shows that student performance has dropped dramatically. School administrators say students and educators have a hard time preparing for the job to be done.
“Every minute we spend thinking about PPE is a minute we’re not thinking about C&I, curriculum, and lessons. When you think about temperature control, don’t think about how literacy is acquired in short people, ”said Mike Morath, Texas Education Commissioner, at the State of Education Summit in Dallas this week.
Morath previously said children were lagging behind at least 10 years and now he says he’s been generous and if you look at Hurricane Katrina this is the closest thing to this type of disruption. Morath said we never fully helped these children.
“After four years of intervention, they caught up with the state average in reading; never all children were not strong in mathematics,” said Morath.
The students are back in the classroom, the disputes over the mask requirement have calmed down somewhat, as has the number of COVID-19 cases in the school. How’s it going? Are the teachers erecting the ship?
“We consciously and deliberately raised a group of children who we knew were not fully prepared for the next grade to do with emotionally stressed children and emotionally stressed parents,” said Linda Ellis, superintendent, Grand Prairie ISD.
Education leaders from across North Texas spoke to business leaders at the Dallas Regional Chambers State of Education Summit about the pressures and challenges they face in the classroom.
The test scores and day-to-day work show that many students are significantly behind, but teachers say their students are stressed and frustrated with the amount of work that needs to be done and this makes their job even more difficult.
“They invest time in social-emotional learning and in coping with trauma, but they hear it and have to respond to it. said Yasmin Bhatia, CEO of Uplife Education. “We see that the teachers are really tired this year.”
Stress or not, the need to achieve something is great.
“If I just isolate elementary and middle school reading and writing skills, I can’t find a reading point as low in the history of our state as the one we had this year. That is the challenge we are facing, ”said Morath.
The educators asked the business community to work with them and help schools find ways out.
