Texas firefighter celebrating his wedding anniversary found dead in Cancun

A Texas firefighter was found dead in the bathroom window of a hotel in Cancun, Mexico this week, officials said. Prosecutors in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo opened an investigation into the circumstances leading to the man’s death Thursday. So far, investigators have found no evidence of violence at the scene of the crime, suggesting that “it could have been an accident,” the authorities added on Friday. Elijah Snow, who was a firefighter in the city of Arlington for eight years, was a popular tourist destination with his wife to celebrate their wedding anniversary, friends told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth. Snow and his wife had been drinking in a hotel bar. Later that night she decided to return to her room, but Snow stayed behind, according to the news channel. His wife then woke up around 4 a.m. to find that he was not there. At this point she started looking for him. Mexican authorities said Snow died of mechanical asphyxiation after crawling into the bathroom window of a hotel in the Benito Juarez community. The hotel where Snow’s body was found is different from the one he stayed at with his wife. In their statement, the Mexican authorities did not name the hotels or explain how Snow might have ended up there. It is still unclear why Snow left the hotel where he was staying or where he could have been. Snow debris was brought back to North Texas from Cancun on Friday, in time for his funeral in Arlington on Tuesday. The Arlington Professional Firefighters Association told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that Snow was an equipment operator and “an excellent firefighter and dedicated officer.” Snow was also the son of Arlington firefighter Ronny Snow, who died on duty in 1985, they added. “The fire brigade will take all necessary steps to ensure that Elijah’s family is adequately supported during this difficult time,” said the association. “Our prayers are with his family.” Snow is survived by his wife and two young children.
