The Concilio – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

NBC 5 is committed to providing you with resources to prepare your children for academic success. Our community partner The Concilio has been providing educational opportunities for Latino families in North Texas for 40 years. They serve families with students in the North Texas public school system, regardless of race, ethnicity, or language. The Concilio is working to fill the gap for underserved communities.

The educational gap has widened further due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the learning landscape has changed. After the school closed in March 2020, online learning shifted where younger students struggled to progress effectively. Despite this setback, the Concilio continued to help underserved communities amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Texas Education Agency, all students suffered approximately three months of absenteeism due to school closings. Students in grades 3 to 5 experienced a marked decline in reading levels. Additionally, some of the youngest students missed critical times in the classroom necessary for early development.

• Over the 2020-2021 period, pre-K enrollment in Texas public schools decreased 22%.
• The number of 3-year-olds in early education programs also fell by 22%.

Latino students remain one of the most disadvantaged groups in the country. Now, more than ever, Latinos and other underserved communities need help to bridge the gap and counter the effects of losses during the pandemic. To do this, The Concilio has developed free programs to help parents, students, and the community. They aim to improve school outcomes by motivating and preparing parents to take an active and supportive role in their children’s education.
